Al Green, while condemning Trump's proposal, quoted civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., saying, “Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is no joke, especially if it comes from the President of the United States, the most powerful person in the world,” Green said as reported by Politico and The Guardian on Friday (7/2/2025).
Trump's plan to move Palestinians from Gaza and reconstruct the war-torn area as part of his broader Middle East strategy has been globally condemned, with critics calling it "outrageous" and "illegal."
In response, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Trump’s proposal, stating, “This is why the American people elected him—because he has unconventional ideas with the goal of lasting peace in the Middle East for everyone in the region.”
The impeachment process has already begun in the US Congress. Green declared, “I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I will be introducing articles of impeachment against the president for his cowardly proposed actions and the cowardly actions already taken.”
This is not the first time Trump has faced impeachment. In 2019, he was impeached on charges of abusing his power related to soliciting help from Ukraine in the upcoming presidential election. In 2021, he faced impeachment again for allegedly inciting the January 6 Capitol riots, though he was acquitted by the Senate on both occasions.
In the US political system, the House of Representatives plays a key role in impeachment proceedings by investigating alleged violations before the Senate ultimately decides the fate of the official. While Trump has previously survived two impeachment trials, Green's move may pose a serious challenge to the former president this time around.
